do you really need a car in the city?

Posted by just donna - June 11, 2008

ok, so i have lived here all my life (minus the few years i lived in surrounding areas, which you might learn more about later). when i was growing up, i couldn't wait to start driving. at 17, when i bought my first car, i just about died and went to heaven! until recently, i thought having a car was a total necessity, an absolute must. maybe this was due to the trauma i endured from taking muni everywhere in my teen years. but honestly, i live in a prime location and work downtown. last night i had to ask myself "are the parking costs, insurance rates and registration fees really worth the driving i do only on the weekends?" and the answer i came up with was NO! so this morning i signed my car over and for the first time in nearly 10 years, i don't own a car! but as a memorial to the car that has served me well for the past few years, here is one last pic...

I haven't had a car for four years. Welcome to the club! Liberating isn't it? Of course, I say this while contemplating a Prius purchase.

After having a car for 12 years, I gave mine to my little brother (after a carless and therefore unsocial semester at UC Irvine, he needed it more than I did). I have never been happier or fitter! And the people you'll meet on MUNI...

Nice!! I love not having a car. You can always do those zip cars if you really need one. And you never need to feel guilty about taking a cab every once in a while, since you're saving on registration...parking....etc!!
